Las iglesias locales constituían un elemento importante en muchas ciudades y pueblos durante al Alta Edad Media en Europa occidental, y su presencia continuada las convertía en indicadores de gran valor para efectuar comparaciones entre las distintas sociedades. Hasta ahora, sin embargo, han sido poco consideradas las dinámicas del poder que se encuentran tras las iglesias, así como la importancia de su presencia en el entorno.
El presente libro tiene un enfoque comparativo e interdisciplinario para el estudio de las primeras iglesias medievales, uniendo la arqueología, la historia, la arquitectura y los estudios de paisaje con el fin de explorar la relación entre la fundación de la iglesia, el poder social y la organización política en toda Europa. Los principales temas abordados aquí incluyen el papel desempeñado por las élites locales y la importancia de la iglesia como refuerzo de la autoridad, así como las conexiones entre la arqueología y la ideología, y la importancia de los edificios religiosos individuales en el contexto más amplio del paisaje.
