Los veinticinco artículos que conforman este volumen surgen de un congreso organizado conjuntamente por la British Archaeological Association y el Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya en Barcelona. Exploran la creación de arte y arquitectura en la Europa latina y el Mediterráneo entre c. 1000 y c. 1250, con un enfoque particular en cuestiones de patrocinio, diseño e instrumentalidad.

Ningún estudio previo sobre patrones de producción artística durante el período románico puede rivalizar con la cobertura que abarca este volumen, tanto en términos de origen geográfico y medios, como en términos de enfoque histórico. Los temas abarcan desde estudios de casos sobre Santiago de Compostela, la Catedral armenia de Jerusalén y la Biblia de Winchester hasta reflexiones sobre la textualidad y la alfabetización de los promotores, la cultura del patrocinio abacial en Saint-Michel de Cuxa y la reinvención de la escultura de losas en relieve alrededor de 1100.
