Este volumen presenta una oportuna contribución al creciente conjunto de estudios sobre los escritos apócrifos y su recepción en la Edad Media, especialmente en relación con la representación visual.

Su objetivo es tender un puente entre lo que a menudo permanece desconectado, el arte visual y el texto escrito, las raíces cristianas primitivas y la recepción medieval, Oriente y Occidente, así como metodologías de diversas disciplinas.

Los estudios de este volumen investigan en primer lugar cuestiones relacionadas con la Virgen María y, a través de ellas, también el estado, la función y la identidad de la mujer. María y el elemento femenino representan así modelos significativos y/o figuras de trasfondo en campos relacionados con la teología, los estudios religiosos, los estudios textuales, los estudios de manuscritos y la historia del arte en una perspectiva transdisciplinaria. En segundo lugar, los estudios se centran en los apóstoles y el Juicio Final, sus representaciones visuales y el uso de fuentes apócrifas. El volumen está dividido en dos partes según dos temas principales: la primera parte trata sobre la presencia de María en los Apócrifos y la segunda parte se centra en los Apóstoles y el Juicio Final.
