Europa Central no es un área, es un mundo. Las contribuciones en este volumen ayudan a hacer balance sobre ello: plantean la cuestión de la existencia de un modelo de santidad centroeuropea en la Edad Media. La geografía de la santidad propuesta hace treinta años por André Vauchez en su tesis sobre «La sainteté en Occident» ha sido notablemente modificada: clasificó a Europa Central en la parte «fría» de christianitas, resistente al cambio en asuntos devocionales. Sin embargo,  este espacio resulta ser inventivo en términos de figuras sagradas, particularmente en el siglo XV, así como receptivo a los nuevos cultos.
